Questions to consider:

• What items should be in the foreground of the piece?
• In the background?
• What images do you want to receive the most attention?

The Arpillera should be constructed with the following constraints:

• 8×10 landscape (in size)
• No clip art or photo images
• Use only shapes such as circles, triangles, rectangles
• No typed text, if you use text it must be represented in another way
• Use only fill colors and/or patters

Reflective Essay Requirements-

5 paragraphs

Answer the Following questions:

• What does your arpillera reveal about civil society? How does it relate back to  the arpilleristas of Chile?
• What suggestions do you have to change or continue what it going on in your arpillera?  How does this relate to other upstanders in Chile that helped the arpilleristas?
• What can an individual do to participate in making a more civil society? Provide examples from today and from Pinchet’s regime.

Answer ONE of the following questions in a well reasoned and well researched 5 paragraph essay.  You may not use your computers for the answer.  However, you may bring in any materials you need (on paper) to help in writing the essay.

Question 1-

Based on what we have gone over so far in class, why do you think Guatemala ended up in a years long Civil War and Genocide?  Make sure to discuss:

• Colonial and Revolutionary history
• US intervention in the early 20th Century (i.e. the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine)
• Current and past cultural issues

Question 2-

What similarities and differences do you see between the military governments of Chile in the 1970’s to that of Guatemala in the last half of the 20th Century?  Be sure to discuss:

• Human rights
• Civil Societies and how they function (What was missing in these countries?)
• Methods of protest and reconcilliation

You answer must be written with appropriate citation when necessary.

STUDY GUIDE

Due: Monday, Feb. 1 (must be typed)

The year is 1929, before the stock market crash; you and the rest of class are going to put together an entertainment news program that highlights some of the decade’s more interesting people events, and productions (i.e. music poetry, painting, writing etc.). This program might be similar to Entertainment tonight or Access Hollywood. The class will need to work closely together and fulfill individual roles to make the project work. Following is an outline concerning the show’s format.

Host Role Description

You are the host of the show. It is your job to know a little bit about everything. You must be familiar qwith the material you are presenting in order for the audience to believe you. You are responsible for writing your introduction and keeping the flow of the show going. With that in mind, consider the following requirements.

Write:

- Show introduction, discuss the purpose of the show and history being discussed, define the Harlem Renaissance

- A piece introducing each segment (with one or two fact about the segment

- End of the show announcements

Interviewer Role Description

You are to interview a famous person from the 1920’s. You must choose what person you are going to interview and research that person’s life. When that is done create a fake interview with that person. Include questions and answers. Remember that you need to let people know WHY they are important to the Harlem Renaissance and American history.

You must:

- write out and entire interview (questions and answers)

- work with the actor playing the part of that famous person and get them to deliver the answers you wrote.

- Give background information on the person

- Act like a professional.

Reporter Role Description

Your roll is similar to the Interviewer. However, instead of interviewing someone, you are reporting “live” from a specific event that took place in the 1920’s. It can be sports, art, entertainment, or a political/historical event. Remember to place yourself in that time period and play up the idea that it is actually happening as you speak.

You must:

- pick an event from the 1920’s

- write out the entire report

- use visuals to present your information (pictures, set, costume)

- give background information on that event (i.e. what events led up to this moment)

Producer Role Description

As producer it is your job to keep the show together. You should provide timing and cue the appropriate people at the right time. You should also work closely with each person and help them with their reports, graphics, interview, or whatever. Keep in mind:

- you need to create a set for the show

- you need to work with EVERYONE and help them out

- you need to keep the time during the show to let people know when they are supposed to speak

- everything on the show relates to the 1920’s, not 2008 (quality assurance)

- Film the show, hook up the mics, and edit it in Final Cut Pro

Actor Role Description

As an actor you wear two hats. One is to create a skit with the other actors that uses the common slang of the 1920’s. The second is to work with the interviewer to act as the famous person. You do not need to do any research for this, just “act” for the interview.

You must:

- create and write out a skit using the slang of the 1920’s

- work with the producer to come up with a set for the skit

- work with the interviewer and MEMORIZE your lines for the interview

- wear historically appropriate clothing

Question:

Did Sacco and Vanzetti get a fair trial, and should they be granted clemency?

Pretend that the year is 1927, you work for the Boston Globe, and Sacco and Vanzetti are set to be executed by electric chair.  Write an newspaper-style editorial about whether or not you think the two men got a fair trial.

The editorial* should address the following:

• What are the rights of
  immigrants?
• Is there equality before the law?
• Should liberty be denied to people who have unpopular political
  views?
