For a Negro's bones.
    Cotton and the moon,
    Warmth, earth, warmth,
The sky, the sun, the stars,
    The magnolia-scented South.
Beautiful, like a woman,
Seductive as a dark-eyed whore,
    Passionate, cruel,
    Honey-lipped, syphilitic--
    That is the South.
And I, who am black, would love her
But she spits in my face.
And I, who am black,
Would give her many rare gifts
But she turns her back upon me.
So now I seek the North--
    The cold-faced North,
    For she, they say,
    Is a kinder mistress,
And in her house my children
May escape the spell of the South.

Question:

Did Sacco and Vanzetti get a fair trial, and should they be granted clemency?

Pretend that the year is 1927, you work for the Boston Globe, and Sacco and Vanzetti are set to be executed by electric chair. Write an newspaper-style editorial about whether or not you think the two men got a fair trial.

The editorial* should address the following:

What are the rights of
immigrants?

Is there equality before the law?

Should liberty be denied to people who have unpopular political
views?

This essay is due by the end of the day on Monday, January 11th on turnitin.com

*Helpful hints for writing this essay:

1) This essay is your OPINION but must include factual information (use class notes!)

2) This essay is a newspaper editorial, it does NOT have to be 5 paragraphs

3) Since it is an editorial and it is YOUR opinion, you CAN PUT YOURSELF IN THE ESSAY (I, me, etc are acceptable)
